The Order of Sons of Italy, Garibaldi Lodge, along with the Winnipeg chapter of Canadian Italian Business Professional Association (CIBPA) invited UAS Eastern European Adoption Services to their 23nd Annual Gala Dinner on Saturday March 14th, 2009 at the Fairmont Winnipeg. Lou Caci, President of the Sons of Italy and Justin Bova, Vice-President of Sons of Italy and Gala Event Chair presented UAS Eastern European Adoption Services members Kris Condon and Nick DeStefano with a $5,000.00 donation cheque that went to assisting with their campaign to ship essential products to the children of Ukraine. The funds paid for the shipping container full of clothes, shoes, first aid and medications, health products and toys to be transported from Winnipeg to various orphanages in Ukraine.

It all started back in the fall of 2008 when Darla Penner, Vice President and Nick DeStefano, Secretary of UAS Eastern European Adoption Services delivered a presentation to the Sons Of Italy Board of Directors hoping to be selected as the 2009 Charity. Although UAS Eastern European Adoption Services was not selected, the Sons of Italy were so moved by the excellent work and commitment of UAS Eastern European Adoption Services that they created a new sponsorship service called “Helping Hands” in order to allow for further community outreach.

The March 14th formal evening was attended by approximately 1,000 guests and was committed to fine food, friends and fun while raising funds for the worthy causes. Notable dignitaries such as the Premier of Manitoba Gary Doer and the President of the University of Winnipeg Lloyd Axworthy were in attendance to deliver their congratulatory messages to the Sons of Italy and to thank them for all the hard work and dedication in make our community a better place for all.

The 2009 Charity was St. Paul’s High School and the Sons of Italy support was sought for the St. Pauls High School Bursary Fund. The Sons of Italy presented Fr. Alan Fogarty, St.Paul’s High School President with a cheque for $50,000.00. This bursary fund ensures that no student who is successful in the admissions process will be refused entry due to an inability to pay tuition.

Other charities and foundations the Sons of Italy has focused its philanthropic activities on include:

The Canadian Museum for Human Rights

Manitoba Theatre Centre

Variety Club of Manitoba

United Way

Victoria General Hospital

Health Sciences Centre, Kleysen Centre for Surgical Innovation

Various Italian community and sport organizations

The Board of Directors for UAS Eastern European Adoption Services would like to publicly thank the Order of Sons of Italy, Garibaldi Lodge for their kind donation and support in assisting the orphan children of Ukraine. The Sons of Italy is truly a first class organization dedicated to assisting those in need and the betterment of our community.
